Who we are, what we offer and why…
Our business, Intergalactic Equine (run by our six horses, my husband, and myself) specializes in creating epic and fast paced riding vacations and training weekends through the more remote and beautiful places in California, Oregon, Wyoming and Nevada. We offer a range of options with different goals and riding opportunities. I’ll give you some basics on prices and options but we are definitely not limited to what I’m sharing with you below! Whatever your riding or fitness goals we can most likely accommodate. Most of the riding clients booking with us this year are Mongol Derby, Gaucho Derby, Tevis Cup Riders, Gobi Cup and Wild Coast Race participants hoping to get some tough training and long hours in the saddle in, but we can easily offer more relaxed or just as rigorous rides to “non-Derbyists.”
Weekends will focus on what you can take home to train on in the arena and at the gym as well as spend a bit of time about the philosophy of human and equine interaction. Endurance and especially adventure racing on unknown Mongolian or Argentinian ponies requires you to approach horses in an entirely new way from modern “arena-based” thinking. You must quickly attain a partnership or at least earn a ticket as a tolerable passenger which is a strange skill in a world where we are originally often taught to “dominate” the horse. Come with an open mind in this department!
Derby weekends will also go over the importance of managing a horse over a distance and how to do so, management of vet checks and a full day of navigation training and practice using the GPS unit you’ll be given in Mongolia / Argentina!
In addition to vacation style riding and/ or riding fitness based weekends we enjoy introducing new riders into the sport of endurance racing. Our horses are quiet but fast and great for giving first time distance riders a great experience. We also enjoy providing horses for international Endurance riders, particularly the 100 mile acclaimed Tevis Cup and 50 mile rides through the World renowned Redwoods as well as week long rides there. No matter your endurance prowess we can match you with the horse, the race and the distance you desire in a stunning part of the American West.
Just a quick bit of background on me; I’ve competed in just about every discipline and a few of them on an international level including National all-around AQHA titles, FEI reining, and achieved a 2 star in eventing. I have successfully completed the three longest horse races in the world; the Mongol Derby, Race The Wild Coast of South Africa and have also completed the inaugural Gaucho Derby in Patagonia. I now solely start horses under saddle, endurance race, and work with horses and actors in stunt and media work. I am also a farrier and enjoy trimming and shoeing all our employees. I have taught natural colt breaking clinics in four countries and worked for Buck Brannaman when I was 16. I’ve competed heavily in triathalons and other survival races (including the worlds most dangerous boat race; The Kraken Cup), and run over 50 half marathons and triathlons as well as taken an interest in trail running and road biking. I once ran my own bakery in Chicago and have a passion for healthy and unhealthy eating and cooking alike along with my master chef husband! Now I just enjoy horses and sharing my understanding of them and love of racing through the woods with others and also enjoy incorporating good food and good company with healthy living in harmony with nature. Our company, Intergalactic Equine, is moving towards a specialization in horse and rider communication.
My husband has very similar ideals (probably why we married each other I suppose) and He and I actually met in Mongolia where he was crewing for the Mongol Derby. He also completed the derby and is an avid horse rider and film horse expert. Both of us have also recently completed the Gaucho Derby and won the coveted “Vets Choice” award for the excellent care of our horses. We truly love what we do and we love our employees beyond measure. To them we offer unlimited benefits as well as a lifetime employment package and full retirement options as well. You’ll find they enjoy what they do also! (Yes I’m referencing our equine employees :).
While most weekends we are happy to share the beautiful Sierra foothills we train and ride in we also offer vacation desitination rides in places like Yosemite, Point Reyes, and the Humboldt (Redwood) National Forest. “Away” vacations cost a bit more and are ride-location and number of guests specific. Generally, we charge $300 a person a day and that usually runs from Friday night to Sunday afternoon and includes six fully catered and locally sourced meals as well as sleeping accommodation and up to 8 hours in the saddle a day. Costs for away rides are slightly more than this. Fitness and horse and human relationship building can also be incorporated into your weekend as we love to share things you are interested in; it’s your dream vacation!
Endurance rides themselves are filling up quickly and generally cost $800 for a 50 mile ride. This includes crew, tack, a fast horse, guidance through the ride and camping accommodation and food. We do currently require a weekend Bootcamp before we allow horse rentals.
